Fusion of Chinese and Western Practices
YWIES offers a unique Primary programme which combines the Chinese National Curriculum of Primary Education and U.K.'s primary curriculum.
Chinese is the language of instruction for the National Curriculum. Subjects taught include Chinese Literacy, Chinese Mathematics, Music and Art. Both local and overseas students are able to achieve good performance in the National Curriculum.
For the international curriculum, the school adopts a co-teaching approach. In the classroom, a native English-speaking teacher and a bilingual teacher teach together. Co-teaching has been proven to be able to meet the complicated needs of students with very different language capabilities. Subjects taught include English Literacy, English Mathematics, Topics and ICT.
Through this international curriculum, we are developing students’ capacity of being bilingual and multi-cultural, and to build up their global mindset.
Moreover, Physical Education is a subject incorporating both Chinese and English curriculums, taught in both English and Chinese.
The school also provides bilingual after-school programmes such as Assembly / Character Development and other extracurricular activities.
Character First
Yew Wah nurtures the individual student's good characteristics, like attentiveness, thankfulness, resourcefulness, generosity, forgiveness, etc. We provide a safe, caring and disciplined environment, give students the opportunity to be successful, nurture a positive outlook, and facilitate a sound foundation for the overall character development.
Student-centred Teaching
No long lectures -- we emphasize on students’ active participation in speaking, reading and role playing. Stress will be avoided because we emphasize students’ natural development as a whole child.
Learning Centre
For students who have special needs on language learning or adapting to the new culture, YWIES has developed a Chinese Learning Centre and an English Learning Centre with individualized teaching so that students can settle down and be well-prepared before entering the regular classes.
Learning Experiences
Integrated Learning - we focus on how students’ learning in one subject is connected to their learning in another subject.
Team Work Learning – we emphasize students’ learning in an interactive manner with small group learning activities.
Learning by Doing - we emphasize on students’ doing practical tasks rather than merely following of textbooks or teacher-developed materials.
Real Life Problems - we emphasize on introducing real-life situation into teaching; helping students to learn about their surroundings, and to solve problems creatively and flexibly.
Joy of Learning - with a lot of English games, songs and role plays, we ensure our students will enjoy the learning process and develop a positive attitude towards learning, which is a prerequisite for life-long learning.
Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting
Students are assessed and evaluated throughout the school year by on-going observations, homework, along with tests. Report cards are issued twice a year at the end of each semester. In these reports, teachers give feedback to parents on students’ performance and provide suggestions for improvement.
In addition to phone calls and emails, parents can communicate with the teachers using the Student’ Handbook. Moreover, there are monthly progress reports and parent-teacher consultations.
Home-School Partnership
We believe that effective education is a result of good partnership between home and school. Good relationship between the school and parents is essential to the benefits of students. Therefore, we work closely with parents and involve them in school life as much as possible.
